What is Jiu Jitsu

  • Striking
  • Grappling
  • Locking
  • Ground fighting
  • Weapons
  • Self defence
  • The original mixed martial arts

Jigero Kano founded the art of Karno Jiu Jitsu (early Judo). The style incorporates the best techniques form a variety of Jiu Jitsu schools of the time with the philosophy of mutual welfare and personal development.

Modern Judo has evolved into a grappling sport. Our style of Kano Jiu Jitsu had maintained the original teachings while also incorporating influences form other arts. The wide range of techniques include striking, locking, grappling and ground-work, knife and short stick.

Jiu (or Ju) means yielding, flowing (soft), applying your own energy to the attacking energy to perform the technique (ju-no-sen). This is in contrast to other martial arts whose dynamic opposes or attacks the opponents energy (go-no-sen). Although both are applicable to our style, Ju is generally more emphasised.

New to Jiu Jitsu?

I'm new to the Martial arts

Want to get fit, learn self defence and meet new people?

Kano Jiu Jitsu 'does what is says on the tin'. The 'Martial' aspect will teach you how to defend yourself, give you confidence and help your fitness level improve. The 'Art' is a physical art, using and applying your knowledge with maximum efficiency with the minimum of effort (seiryoku zenyo).

I'm from a Judo / grappling background

You have running start. The dynamics of jiu jitsu are different from Jodo but you will recognise many of the techniques. Come an expand your knowledge in locking and striking. Locks can be added to throws and striks and locks can be used on the ground. Our emphasis is towards defence and multiple attack, not one on one competition with a referee.

I'm from a Karate / striking background

Bring everything you have learnt in striking with you, you will need it all. Plus add to it all the locking, throwing and groundwork techniques. Strikes can be applied to locked out joint, eyes, knees and everywhere in reach, even on the ground. Learn how to defend from grappling attacks and multiple opponents.
